QC Government Boosts Employment Opportunities for Job Seekers

Hundreds of jobs from several local and international employers were offered to jobseekers at the Labor Day Job Fair held today at Quezon City Hall and Fisher Mall.

Held in cooperation with the Department of Labor and Employment- NCR (DOLE-NCR) through the QC Public Employment Service Office, the job fair has drawn thousands of jobseekers from the city’s barangays.

QC PESO chief Carlo Magno Abella estimated that about 6,000 to 7,000 job applicants came to the job fair, 362 applicants were hired on-the-spot for local employment and 98 applicants hired for overseas employment.

He said the annual May 1 job fair has always attracted huge number of applicants because more employers and companies participate in it.

Representatives of the Department of Labor and Employment- NCR (DOLE NCR), led by Assistant Regional Director Sarah Buena Mirasol also came to monitor the turnout of job applicants in the job fair.

For job seekers, job fairs provide them with the chance to apply at several companies without having to travel to their offices.

Jennifer Bandang, an undergraduate student from Barangay Pasong Tamo, said that it was her first time to apply for a job and she was happy with the experience. She said the job fair has helped her as she did not have to travel far to apply.

Another job seeker, Michael Retardo, an office supervisor, said participating in a job fair is better because applicants are assisted by DOLE and PESO employees. In addition, an applicant is also assured of the credibility of employers.

During the job fair, six applicants applying for jobs as cashiers and sales assistants in Qatar, were hired on the spot and were interviewed immediately by the POEA.

Aside from job fairs, the city government, through PESO, also conducts regular skills and job training to raise the employability of job applicants. One of these is Job Start, a program funded by the Canadian Government and administered by the Asian Development Bank, which aims to increase the level of competency and competitiveness of applicants in the labor market.

The city government also provided employment to the youth and students through programs such as SPES and GIP.

This year, about 650 students work under the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) and Sikap Kabataang Pinoy Program or Government Internship Program (GIP).

They started working in various departments and offices at QC Hall on April 10.
