To Micro and Small Businesses in Quezon City: Mentor Me is Here!

The Department of Trade and Industry-NCR launched today, May 31, at the QC Experience Museum (QCX)  in Quezon City, the Kapatid Mentor Me (KMME) program, to help 21 Quezon City-based small businesses scale up their operations.  A major program partner is Go Negosyo.

kmme_paxIn his opening remarks, Pacifico Maghacot, who is president of the Quezon City chapter of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI-QC), encouraged participants to make the program both a learning and teaching experience, since the mentees themselves are already business owners who can share with each other lessons in successful business practices.  He considered the 10-module course similar to a masters in business administration.

kmme03bDTI Asec. for Regional Operations Blesilda Lantoyana, exhorted the chosen small business participants to take the program seriously and to attend all the sessions because the modules are well prepared to help small businesses survive and thrive, and includes valuable one-on-one mentoring from successful businessmen.  She said that 99.6% of enterprises in the Philippines are micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which makes them a potent force in economic growth and employment generation.  Sadly, 70% to 80% of new micro and small businesses fold up after one year, usually because of poor financial management and lack of product development and innovation.  Usually also, business plans are only in the small business owner’s mind and not thoroughly and systematically thought out.

kmme_irbQuezon City Councilor Irene Belmonte, chairperson of the Committee on Trade, Commerce and Industry, cited local legislative initiatives to push the MSME advocacy forward.   These include the city’s Magna Carta for Small Businesses and the operationalization of the Small Business Development office, to scale up the efforts of the Sikap Buhay Entrerpreneurship Office, which has been assisting livelihood growth through its capital lending program. In Quezon City, Php 4.82 billion worth of loans have been extended to micro entrepreneurs, 90,824 livelihood borrowers have been capitalized, 40,284 small entrepreneurs continue to grow, 20,252 individuals given capacity building and livelihood trainings, and 121 trade exhibitors given access to formal markets.  The number continue to grow!
