The Quezon City Government, through the Environmental Protection and Waste Management Department (EPWMD), has stepped up efforts to improve air quality and reduce air pollution as it launched Transportation Summit 2017, with the theme: “E-Vehicle for the New Generation”, at the QC Hall lobby, today, November 27, 2017.

Speaking before barangay officials, members of TODA (tricycle operators and drivers association) and other guests at the summit, EPWMD head Frederika Rentoy said that the activity is part of Quezon City’s commitment to the Deadline 2020, a response of the C40 Cities to the Paris Agreement, which seeks to limit the rise of global temperature to 1.5 degree Celsius, through low carbon projects. QC is the only LGU member of C40 in the country.

A study on greenhouse gas (GHG) emission conducted by the department found that the transport sector is the largest emitter of GHG, according to Ms. Rentoy.
Ms. Rentoy added that the summit would help increase awareness of the public on the use of electric vehicles (EV) and present the new generation vehicles as an alternative mode of transport, which are economical and environment-friendly.
She added that the city government is open to new ideas and projects on how to come up with clean technology.

Meanwhile, Councilor Elizabeth Delarmente urged participants to help reduce air pollution as a contribution in the fight against global warming.
Dr. Mylene Cayetano, assistant professor and deputy director for academic affairs of the University of the Philippines – Institute for Environmental Science and Meteorology (UP-IESM), discussed the risks posed on health by air pollutants as well as the initiatives taken by the city government and private partners in monitoring the air quality in the city.
The summit also features an exhibition of new generation vehicles or e-vehicles, which will run from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Risen Garden, QC Hall compound. The exhibitors include MSERV/ Meralco, HIVILTOR, EV Wealth Inc., Star 8 Green Technology Corp., BEMAC Electric Transportation Philippines Inc. and Tojo Motors.
