212 of 284 bidded QC infra projects completed

The Quezon City government reportedly bidded out P2.16 billion worth of infrastructure projects in 2009 in a bid to transform the city to a more livable society and provide more comfort to its residents.

Joselito Cabungcal, chief of the Quezon City Engineering Office (QCEO), reported that 212 of the 284 bidded projects were completed for a 75 percent efficiency rate.

The bulk of the infrastructure work went to the category of roads that include asphalting, improving drainage, redeveloping roads and sidewalks where 91 projects worth P513,103,539.58 million were finished.

Cabungcal, in his report to Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr., cited the East Avenue sidewalk redevelopment program as one of the pet projects of the city under the roads category.

Tadeo Palma, secretary to the mayor, said that the city government also set aside funds to upgrade and develop the city’s parks including the 26-hectare Quezon Memorial Circle (QMC) which is now under the local government.

In its continuing effort to improve the city’s public educational system, Cabungcal said the city government completed 47 projects worth P427,273,127.40 million under the schools category.

Under the schools group, Cabungcal six public schools were built at the cost of P302,12, 067.47 million while 36 school buildings were repaired at a cost of P104, 440, 484.20 million.

To ensure the safety of the teachers, students and other school personnel, the city government spent P20, 709, 575.73 million for the building of fences.

The major projects included in the schools category are the construction of a new four-storey, 19 classroom school building at Batasan Elementary School and the four-storey, 19 classroom school building at the Quezon City Polytechnic University satellite campus in Batasan Hills.

In the category of government buildings, the city government completed 17 projects worth P78, 029,785.79 million which include two day care centers, three health centers, two police stations, one library and nine multi-purpose halls.

Belmonte is continuously monitoring the status of the city’s infrastructure projects as he wants them completed before his terms ends on June 30, 2010.
