December 11, 2017 - Quezon City is recognized for its exceptional contribution in disaster riskreduction and management at the 19 th Gawad KALASAG (2017) held at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria in Ortigas Center. Mayor Herbert Bautista, together with several QC officials, receivedthe recognition for Quezon City as 1st runner up, “Best City Disaster Risk Reduction andManagement Council – Highly Urbanized City Category” by the National Disaster Risk Reductionand Management Council (NDRRMC).
Annually, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council holds the GawadKALASAG to recognize local Disaster Risk Reduction offices nationwide for their noteworthyperformance and practices in DRRM and humanitarian assistance. For the 19 th Gawad KALASAG,the NDRRMC awarded 58 local DRR offices for their exemplary work, as well as various groupsand individuals for their DRRM initiatives in 2017.
Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG ) Undersecretary Austere Panadero saidthat midst the challenges of limited resources each of the finalists were all heroes who alreadyexpressed their commitment to DRRM work. Department of National Defense (DND) SecretaryDelfin Lorenzana congratulated all of the awardees for their efforts in resiliency andresponsiveness. He recognized that the DRR initiatives of the local government units, civilsociety organizations, and active citizens are the frontline defence against disasters.
